Model nameplates and labels: choosing textures, geometry or page overlays

Physical markings may belong in textures or geometry. Text that changes, requires translation or must remain readable is a candidate for a separate page label. Both can coexist, provided content ownership, updates and duplication rules are explicit.

Separate physical appearance from business information

A fixed brand mark and the location of a nameplate belong to the equipment's physical appearance. The application's short equipment name, area or operational label may change with management practice. Baking the latter into a texture makes a simple text edit an asset-processing task. Conversely, floating every marking over the page can remove useful characteristics that help viewers recognize the physical object.

Inventory the text with its source, whether it must be read precisely, expected change frequency, language requirements and publication limits. For serial numbers or other sensitive information visible on real plates, confirm the permitted display scope. Do not automatically reproduce every detail from a site photograph in a public model.

Choose among three forms

The official Three.js CSS2DRenderer documentation describes combining HTML labels with 3D objects and states a limitation to 100% browser and display zoom. Checked on October 6, 2026, this is a tool-specific example rather than a universal answer for every device. Verify the chosen implementation against the project's actual requirements.

Maintain one authoritative text register

Associate each entry with a stable equipment identifier, but record physical plate content separately from the business display name. Assign an approver, the source file or system responsible for maintaining it, and whether the change belongs in the model or the page. Maintain Chinese and English names together instead of deriving customer-facing wording from technical filenames.

Hypothetical example: a cabinet retains its fixed plate appearance, while the page presents an editable “Circulation Pump Control Cabinet” label and its Chinese equivalent. A business rename updates page data. A physical plate replacement updates the asset. Those two changes should not silently become one text field merely because they refer to the same equipment.

Test viewing conditions and a real update

  1. Inspect the default view and the closest and farthest permitted distances against the agreed reading requirement.
  2. Rotate behind the object or place another object in front. Confirm that labels hide according to the chosen rules rather than appearing to reveal information through solid surfaces.
  3. Test long names and both languages for wrapping. Do not shrink every label to conceal one overflowing entry.
  4. Change one business name and reload. Confirm that the model does not need re-exporting and that an old baked label does not contradict the new name.
  5. Show neighboring equipment together and check repetition. A suitable rule may keep the physical appearance at a distance and reveal a complete business label only after selection.

Record which labels must remain readable at each stage. This prevents a later reviewer from treating every tiny physical marking in an overview as a missing application feature, while preserving clear requirements for names needed to complete a task.

What about offline files and exported images?

A page label does not necessarily travel with the model file. For a standalone viewer, offline package or fixed image, specify whether labels belong in that deliverable and test the actual export route. A correct browser display cannot prove that a separate model file contains the same text.

Textures may be sufficient for fixed appearance. Independent text is usually easier to maintain when names change frequently or require translation, provided the label-management mechanism has actually been implemented. That choice still requires development and verification; it does not guarantee automatic support for every zoom setting or device.

List how names change, which languages are needed and whether delivery must work offline. Use the model and UI coordination guide to decide where text belongs, and include label counts and viewing angles in performance checks. For 3D modeling services (Chinese), one agreed name register can coordinate embedded text and page labels instead of leaving two independent naming systems.
